Surfing isn’t just for adults. Kids can also enjoy the waves from a very young age. Learning to surf develops balance, coordination, confidence, and a love of nature. In an unbeatable setting, they’ll have a wonderful time with views of the African continent and in the heart of the Estrecho Natural Park.
Fun, safety, and adventure from a young age...
First, at what age can they start and what are the basic principles? Many children start as young as 4 or 5, always under the supervision of their instructor and in very safe conditions. It’s important that they know how to swim and that their cognitive and learning abilities are secure in the water.
In other words, they need to feel comfortable in the water. Little ones usually have endless fun in the water.
So imagine yourself on a soft board to ride your first waves. We always tailor classes to optimal conditions and the most suitable equipment (boards and wetsuits).

The benefits of surfing for children are evident.
- Physical: it improves balance, coordination, endurance, and strength.
- Mental: it increases self-esteem, reduces stress, and promotes concentration.
- Social: it promotes teamwork, respect for nature, and patience.
Necessary equipment for surfing in Tarifa and where it is best for them
The surfboard should be soft. It’s safer and more stable for beginners.
A wetsuit. It will protect you from the cold, the sun, and possible chafing caused by the board rubbing against you. In Tarifa’s waters, where temperatures range between 17 and 19 degrees Celsius, the perfect wetsuit size will be a 4/3.
Paraffin or wax is also essential to prevent slipping on the board. Don’t forget to apply the wax where you’ll be placing your feet. That is, on the tail of the board and on the core.
Finally, the leash to keep your board safe should be attached to your back foot. If you’re a goofy (right foot forward), attach the leash to your left foot. On the other hand, if you’re a regular, attach it to your right foot.
Safety is paramount. That’s why finding the ideal surfing spot is essential.
Don’t forget water-resistant sunscreen, which is essential for their protection. ☀️✌️
ADVICE FOR PARENTS
- Choose an official, certified school with liability and accident insurance for complete peace of mind. Like Surf Tarifa School.
- Start with group lessons. Children will learn best with other children their age. It will also help them socialize and share.
- Don’t force them. Let them ask when and how they want to do the activity. Don’t make it obligatory or forced, and when they go into the water, it’s to enjoy themselves and have a good time.
